| Description | These folders contain letters between Major-General Frederick Smith and Henry Gray, a practising veterinary surgeon based in Earl's Court, London.
At the time the letters commence, Smith is about to, or very recently did, retire from the Army Veterinary Service as Major General. Mention is made in later letters, that Henry Gray was examined by Smith
at the Royal Veterinary College, and the first letters mostly relate to reviewing and assisting each other's writing, particularly on the subject of the eye.
There are long gaps between the runs of letters, and for the first years, only Smith's letters are enclosed. Gray's replies start to appear in 1917. As the letters continue, more personal information and candid opinion is shared between the two men. Most of the discussion relates to the history, current state, and hoped future of the veterinary profession.
There are also enclosed a few letters from other individuals to Gray or Smith.
At time of cataloguing, the letters were kept together in a folder with a manuscript list of some of the letters, with notes on the subjects covered. This list was created c.1969. |
