DescriptionLetters between Frederick Smith and Fred Bullock, Secretary of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons [RCVS]. The main subject of discussion is research carried out by Smith, with Bullock's assistance, regarding manuscript and literary sources of veterinary history during the sixteenth, seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and ancient documents from Egyptian, Greek and Byzantine empires. This research led towards Smith's publication of 'Early History of Veterinary Literature' in the 'Journal of Comparative Pathology and Therapeutics'. Particular topics of interest are: sources held at the Public Record Office and British Museum, in particular the Sloane and Harley manuscripts, 'Geoponica' and 'Hippiatrica', and records of Royal use of horses; documents and books held in other libraries and private collections; contact with and assistance from Leon Moule in France, and Dr A S Lea, from Emmanuel College, Cambridge; the Arab Period in Europe, Babylon, Assyria and the Middle Ages; Bullock assisting with editing proofs of 'Veterinary History of the War in South Africa'; reviews of Smith's publications; photographing manuscripts; the status of the veterinary profession.
