DescriptionThis folder contains hand-drawn charts displaying data collected about horses used by four different branches of the Army Service in South Africa from 1903-1904. The four branches are the Cavalry, the Royal Artillery, the Mounted Infantry and the Remounts. During this time, Smith was Principal Veterinary Officer in South Africa. The eleven charts display various data including: three regarding the admissions (presumably to a veterinary hospital), of horses with various different classification of disease or injury, including wounds, lameness or digestive system diseases; three regarding the percentage of admissions for lymphangitis or opthalmia, by unit; one regarding mortality from glanders and horse sickness per annum in each unit from their average strength; one regarding the percentage of each disease in cases of sickness, by branch; one regarding death rate of admitted horses and mules from the whole army; and one regarding percentage of admissions of average monthly strength.
