| Description | This item is a newspaper cutting of an article about the Tugela Battle [also known as the Battle of Colenso], which took place on the 15th December 1899. The article is drawn from the account of an unnamed officer, writing under the pseudonym 'Mercury'. Smith has highlighted a part of the text which relates to a fox-terrier dog seen running along the marching troops, and annotated 'I also saw this dog advancing under fire. F.S.' Smith also writes, presumably to his wife, that it is a good account of the battle. |
