| Description | This volume contains manuscript notes made by Smith during his journey to South Africa aboard the SS Templemore, and subsequent service with the 13th Hussars during the Battle of Colenso and the Battle of Vaal-Krantz. The notes mostly comprise of brief lists of sick or injured horses, referred to by an alphanumeric name (e.g. C 64). There are other brief notes, such as names and addresses, and sketches of the layout of the cargo ship.
