Description | This subseries of material mostly comprises of records of Smith's veterinary work as part of the Army Veterinary Service. Some of these records are in a pro forma structure, or recorded in notebooks, but there are many handwritten notes and sketches of cases on scraps of paper. Often the horse being treated is only referred to by number, or as belonging to an individual. If the horse was destroyed or died as a result of illness, there is often a report of a post-mortem examination. Smith carried out this work in India from 1877 to 1885, at the Army Veterinary School, Aldershot from 1886 to 1896, and at the Remount Depot at Woolwich from 1896 to 1899.
The notebooks in this subseries have had many pages cut out, and it is possible that these have been redistributed according to anatomy or pathology, and so are amongst the papers catalogued at FS/2/2/2/1 and FS/2/2/2/2. This redistribution may have taken place much later in Smith's life, and at this later time, he also added articles and manuscript notes from later dates. |
