DescriptionThese papers were collected together by Smith under the title 'Respiratory including Diaphragm Spasm and Rupture' and relate to cases of horse illness and injury treated by Smith and other army veterinarians. The case notes cover work carried out for the 12th Royal Lancers at Secunderabad [Sikandar-a-bad] in India from 1881 and for the Army Service Corps and 5th Royal Lancers at Aldershot from 1887-1892. There are also some post-mortem examination reports, and sketches and paintings to illustrate injuries. Most of the case notes are by one person, presumed to be Smith himself.

Injuries and illnesses treated include: broken wind, oedema of the lungs, carcinoma, hydrothorax, emphysema, suffocation, spasm of the diaphragm, pleurisy, pneumonia, gangrene.

Also included in the folder is correspondence to Smith from officers based at Aldershot, dated 1926, regarding records of cases. There are printed articles of Smith's cases, published in veterinary journals in 1892-1896, and some articles not written by Smith from 'The Veterinary Record' 1891-1892. Also enclosed is a manuscript list of respiratory system related cases recorded elsewhere in post-mortem examination note books.

There is also a page of manuscript notes by Smith, which appear to be an index to pages relating to the muscular system and locomotion.
