Description | These papers were collected together by Smith under the title 'Joints' and relate to cases of horse illness and injury treated by Smith and other army veterinarians. The case notes cover work carried out for the 12th Royal Lancers at Bangalore [Bengaluru] and Secunderabad [Sikandar-a-bad] in India from 1880-1884 and for the Army Service Corps at Aldershot from 1889-1892. There are also some post-mortem examination reports and notes of experiments. Most of the case notes are by one person, presumed to be Smith himself, but there are some notes in other handwriting.
Injuries and illnesses treated include: overreach of tendon, ostitis, tetanus, dislocations, lameness, synovitis, navicular disease, calcareous degeneration.
At the front of the folder there is a manuscript list of joints-related cases recorded elsewhere in post-mortem examination note books. Also enclosed in the folder are several paintings and sketches of diseased joints and related anatomy, calcareous livers, and a scene of a horse in a sling. There is also a letter to Smith from John M'Fadyean, Royal (Dick) Veterinary College, Edinburgh, dated 30 Jul 1891, regarding Smith's illustrations to be included in his forthcoming article. |
