DescriptionThese papers were collected together by Smith under the title 'Hocks' and relate to research carried out in the course of cases of horse illness and injury treated by Smith.

Enclosed is a notebook in which several manuscript pages are pasted. These notes relate to Smith's collection of hocks, including case numbers, photograph references, measurements and other features. A note by Smith on the front of the book states that the accompanying specimens were placed in the museum of the Army Veterinary School, Aldershot, but that they no longer existed when Smith returned in 1927. The photographs are kept in an additional notebook in this folder.

A separate bundle of papers is labelled as relating to an article by Smith on spavin, published in 1893. Enclosed are manuscript notes and plates of photographs of hocks.

The remainder of the folders contents are notes and sketches on the anatomy of the hock and spavin, some of which are dated 'India 1882'.
