DescriptionThis subseries of material mostly comprises of records of Smith's veterinary work as part of the Army Veterinary Service. Some of these records are in a pro forma structure, but there are many handwritten notes of cases on scraps of paper. Often the horse being treated is only referred to by number, or as belonging to an individual. If the horse was destroyed or died as a result of illness, there is often a report of a post-mortem examination. Smith carried out this work in India from 1877 to 1885, at the Army Veterinary School, Aldershot from 1886 to 1896, and at the Remount Depot at Woolwich from 1896 to 1899.

Smith collected these records together into folders relating to specific parts of horse anatomy. It is likely that this was done many years after the records were created, to inform Smith's research and writing of articles and books on horse anatomy. At this later time, he also added articles and manuscript notes to these folders.
